Old timer told me to grease the hook block every single day no matter what

Did you ever find the grease was actually causing more buildup over time?

Did that old timer ever say why, or was it just one of those "because I said so" things? I had a guy on a crane crew years ago who swore by scrubbing the hook block with a wire brush every morning before the grease. Drove me nuts at first but after I saw one seized up from dirt and grime I never skipped it again.
