Got a buddy who spent six months in a critique group getting endless praise for how "natural" his dialogue sounded. Turns out his characters all talked exactly like him, same jokes, same word choices, every single one. When he finally asked why nobody mentioned that, one person admitted they figured it was a style choice. He rewrote the whole thing with distinct voices and the next agent he sent it to signed him. Sometimes people just tell you what's easy to say, not what's useful.
