The guy next to me at the laundromat on 5th read my opening chapter out loud and I wanted to crawl under the folding table
I was stuck on my opening chapter for my sci-fi novel so I brought the printed pages to a laundromat on 5th Street last Tuesday to get away from my apartment. A guy folding his towels noticed the pages, asked what it was, and I said a rough draft, so he read the first page out loud while his dryer ran. Hearing it in a stranger's voice made me catch how stiff the dialogue was and how I buried the actual hook in paragraph two. I went home and rewrote the whole opening that night without changing the plot. Anyone else tried hearing their messy draft read by someone else before they cleaned it up?
