I finally understood why you should never share a prompt at a public workshop
At the Seattle Public Library's monthly writing meetup, I gave my idea about a detective who can smell lies. Someone there took it, wrote a full story, and posted it online before I could even start my draft. Now I keep my best prompts in a private notebook until I'm ready to write them myself. Has anyone else had a prompt idea taken at an event?

My buddy Rick had this happen at a writers group in Portland. He mentioned a plot about a food truck that only appears at midnight and serves people their last meal before they die. Two weeks later someone in the group had a whole short story up on a site called Midnight Kitchen. Rick was pissed because the guy even used the same truck name he had jotted down in his notes. Now Rick brings a decoy prompt to every meeting and keeps the real ones locked in his phone notes. Have you started carrying that notebook everywhere yet?
