The IT guy at my kid's school said one sentence about passwords that stuck with me for a month
I was at parent night at Lincoln Elementary in Boise last month and the IT guy mentioned he cracked 14 of the 20 teacher passwords in under 10 minutes because they were all pet names with a 1 at the end. He said the scary part isn't hackers, it's that most people use the same password for their bank and their fantasy football league. I went home and changed 9 accounts that night, and I'm still working through the rest. Has anyone actually gotten a whole family onto a password manager, or does everyone just give up after the first argument?
The thing nobody talks about is that a password manager only fixes half the problem. Your master password becomes the one key to everything, so if someone gets that, they get it all at once. What worked for our house was making the master password something we could both remember but nobody could guess, like a weird sentence about our first date that only makes sense to us. Then we set up the family sharing thing so my wife and I can both get into the accounts without texting each other codes all day. Kids get their own vault and we don't share theirs, which honestly ended most of the fighting because they felt like they had their own space. Took about two weekends of grumbling but now nobody wants to go back.
