PSA: My neighbor's lawn went from brown to green in just 14 days after one simple change

So I've been fighting with my lawn for two years. Watering every morning, throwing down fertilizer from Home Depot. Nothing worked. Then my neighbor Bob tells me he just stopped cutting his grass so short. He raised his mower deck from 2 inches to 3.5 inches. That's it. In two weeks his yard is thick and dark green while mine still looks patchy. So is the secret really just letting the grass grow longer or is there more to it? Anyone else seen this kind of change just from mowing higher?

Stopping cutting it so short" is wild, I always thought shorter grass meant less work but now I'm rethinking everything.

My buddy @kai602 did this exact thing last spring - scalped his lawn down to nothing thinking he was saving time, and then spent all summer fighting weeds and watering twice as much just to keep the damn thing alive.
