Chat with an old timer at the truck stop in Billings made me check my DEF assumptions
I was grabbing coffee and this guy, Frank, saw my shop shirt and started talking about DEF filter life. He said he's seen guys run the same filter for 50,000 miles without a hiccup, but he swaps his every 15,000 miles on the dot because he's had injectors clog from the silicate gel breakdown. I always just went by the book, but his point about the quality of DEF you buy making a huge difference got me thinking. How often do you all actually change your DEF filters, and do you stick to the manual or go by feel?

Right? Like Sarah_hart said, real world beats the manual.

Ever notice how this happens with everything now? The manual says one thing, but the real world says another. I see it with my phone battery (they say let it drain, but charging it little bits works better) and even cooking times on packages. That old timer's 15,000 mile rule is probably his own real world manual, born from a clogged injector. Makes you wonder what other "by the book" rules are just a starting point.

My buddy Jake followed the manual for his new grill to the letter. The chicken was still raw inside, just like sarah_hart said about package times. He had to learn his own real world rule about using a meat thermometer.
