Spent 10 years glueing foam wrong, a kid at Megacon set me straight

I was at Megacon last March watching this teenager assemble a Mandalorian chest piece. She used contact cement on both surfaces, let it dry for like 15 minutes, then pressed them together. I'd been just slapping the glue on one side and sticking it immediately for over a decade. All my seams were always peeling at the edges, thought that was just how foam worked. Has anyone else had a basic technique click way later than it should have?
