My monitor arm ate my desk corner, so I built a fake one

Last month I clamped a cheap monitor arm to my desk and it crushed the particle board edge after a few days. I panicked and tore the whole setup apart, but then I cut a 2x4 block, painted it matte black, and clamped it underneath to spread the weight. It looks janky but the arm sits solid now, and I only spent $8 on paint. Anyone else rig a support beam under their desk instead of buying a proper mount?
