My monitor arm clamp failed and my 27" screen hit the floor today

I was adjusting my cable tray behind the desk this morning when the whole clamp just snapped off the back edge. The monitor fell face down onto my hardwood floor and the screen cracked in the top left corner. Turns out the clamp was only rated for desks up to 1.5 inches thick, and my butcher block top is about 2 inches. Has anyone else had a clamp fail on a thicker desk? I'm thinking of drilling a grommet mount instead now.

I saw someone on a woodworking sub say that butcher block expands and contracts with humidity, so even if the clamp is rated right it can still loosen up over time. Grommet mount makes way more sense for that.

Slam your fist on the desk if you've ever had this happen, because my old clamp snapped the exact same way on a 2.25 inch oak desktop last year. The whole monitor took a dive and the screen looked like a spider web in the bottom right corner after it hit the floor. Drilling for a grommet mount is definitely the way to go, I did that after my crash and it's been solid ever since.
