Picked a butcher block countertop over a standing desk frame last month
I was set on a motorized standing desk from one of those big online places for $450. Then I walked into a lumber yard near my shop and saw a 6 foot maple butcher block slab for $120. I built the legs myself from iron pipe and spent $60 total. Has anyone else gone the custom top route and regretted skipping the electronics?

Man, I gotta push back on this one a little. In my experience, having a motorized sit-stand function makes a huge difference if you're at your desk for 8+ hours a day, and constant manual adjustments can become a real pain. I've owned both types, and honestly, my back and neck really started missing that easy transition, which is something you don't think about until it's gone. Just my two cents, your mileage may vary, but the electronic lift can be worth the extra cash for comfort long-term.

Oh come on, you're really selling the motorized part short. I had one of those sit-stand desks for two years and honestly I barely used the standing feature after the first month, it just felt gimmicky. Meanwhile this butcher block top is solid as a rock, I can lean on it, spill coffee on it, and sand it down if I mess it up - no motor can do that.
