Just realized my joystick drift was from worn out rubber pads, not the stick itself

Last week my left joystick started drifting during a ranked match, so I pulled it apart expecting to replace the whole module. Turns out the little rubber contact pads under the board were flattened and shiny from two years of use. I sanded them lightly with 800 grit paper and cleaned the carbon contacts with alcohol, and it fixed the drift completely. Cost me nothing but 20 minutes, and now I check those pads first before buying any parts. Has anyone else tried resurfacing those pads instead of swapping the joystick module?

Did you use the same grit on both the pads and the carbon contacts, or did you keep them separate? I have heard that going too rough on the rubber can actually make the surface tacky and pick up more dirt over time. Just curious if you noticed any difference in how the stick feels now compared to when it was brand new. Might be worth trying on my old controller before I give up on it.
