Swapped my mushy stock rubber domes for silicone pads on an old pad, and the buttons went from spongy to snappy in about 2 hours
I pulled an old wired pad out of a drawer about 10 days ago because the face buttons felt like pressing wet bread. The stock rubber dome pads had gone soft after years of use, so the press had no clear bottom to it and I kept missing inputs in fighting games. I ordered a set of replacement silicone pads for about $8 and put them in at my kitchen table with just a screwdriver and some tweezers. The first swap took me close to 40 minutes because I was scared of ripping the little contact pads, but the second controller went way faster once I knew the trick of lifting the dome with a small flat tool instead of my nails. The difference was instant. The buttons now pop back with a sharp click and I can feel exactly where the press bottoms out. What surprised me was how much I could tune it, I put slightly thicker pads under the two buttons I mash most and those now need a bit more force which stopped my accidental presses. Old pads are cheap and this mod is reversible, so if your buttons feel dead, grab a set and try it before you buy a whole new controller. Anyone got a source for different pad thicknesses, or do you just stack them to get the feel you want?
