Cutting plywood with the finish side down vs up, which side is right?

Spent 5 years cutting with the shiny side up because it felt wrong to face it down. Buddy watched me tear out a sheet last week and goes 'flip it, you dummy.' Tested it on a cheap 2x4 and the splintering vanished. Has anyone else been doing it backwards this long?
