My neighbor flat out told me my privacy fence looked like a patchwork quilt

I was pretty proud of using scrap wood from three different projects to save money, but he pointed out the gaps and mismatched boards made the whole yard look trashy. I ended up taking it all down and spending $240 on matching cedar pickets from Home Depot to redo it the right way. Has anyone else gotten that kind of blunt honesty that actually saved you from your own bad choices?

Man I felt that one in my bones. I did the exact same thing with a deck railing last summer, used pressure treated leftovers from a shed and some old cedar decking, thought I was being smart and thrifty. My brother in law came over, took one look, and said it looked like a kid built it from a pile of yard scraps. He was right though, the different wood tones and heights were driving me crazy once he pointed it out. Tore the whole thing down and spent like $300 on proper matching railing, now it actually looks like a real part of the house instead of some Frankenstein project. Sometimes you need someone to call it like they see it before you realize you're just making problems for yourself.

Is it bad my first thought was "well at least it didn't collapse on you"?
