Swapped my soldering iron for a cheap one at a garage sale

I used to think you needed a $200 station to do decent pedal builds, but a guy named Mike at the flea market in Austin talked me into a $15 iron he had on his table. He said, 'It's all about tip control, not the price tag,' and let me try it on his test board right there. That $15 iron got my fuzz build done in one night, no cold joints, and I haven't looked back since. Anyone else find a bargain tool that outperformed their expensive stuff?

Take that lesson and run with it, man. I grabbed a $30 pawn shop multimeter years ago, and it reads caps and resistors just as clean as my buddy's $150 Fluke. The real magic is how you set up your workflow, not the gear. Once you learn to trust your ears and your hands, the funny thing is you stop babying the expensive stuff and start building faster. I've got a $60 soldering station now that I picked up off a guy who was moving, and it beats the hell out of the name brand one I sold online. Tbh, the only thing that really matters is keeping that tip clean and using the right size for the joint. Cheap tools just force you to slow down and get the basics right, which honestly makes you a better builder in the long run.
