Bought a $180 laser level, used it once, now it's a doorstop

Picked up a green beam laser level for a bathroom tile job last month, thought it would be my new favorite tool, but the battery died halfway through and the replacement pack costs $60. Anyone else sink cash into a fancy gadget that just collects dust, or am I the only sucker here?

Ever think about renting this stuff instead of buying? I know a guy who rents out laser levels for like $25 a day, and for a one weekend tile job that math works way better than $180 plus a $60 battery.
