My engineer buddy's 'check the math first' talk made me tear up my whole cutting setup

Had a beer with my buddy Dave who does mastering for a small label last Friday. He watched me level my lathe by eye and said 'you are chasing ghosts if your depth stops are wobbling at 0.0005 inches.' That hit different because I had been blaming my stylus wear for sibilance on side two of a 7 inch I cut. Turned out my homemade vacuum hold down had a 0.003 inch runout that I never measured, just felt flat. I spent Sunday building a simple dial indicator mount from a $12 harbor freight gauge and now my cuts are way more consistent. Anyone else found that measuring the rig instead of swapping parts solved a recurring noise issue?

Funny how we always blame the parts that cost money before the parts that cost nothing to check. But honestly, maybe your buddy's advice just gave you an excuse to feel productive while the real problem was still your cutting technique or your room acoustics. A dial gauge tells you the machine is flat, it doesn't tell you if your stylus is actually cutting at the right angle or if your cutter head is heating up wrong. You could measure every bearing and still have sibilance because your chip clearance sucks or your blank is slightly damp. That 0.003 runout might have been there the whole time you were making decent cuts too, so what changed besides you feeling more confident? Sometimes swapping parts is faster than chasing ghosts with a $12 toy, especially if that toy gives you a false sense of security. Did you A/B test the same record before and after the mount, or are we just trusting the vibe?
