Used to draw every line separate, now I copy my wall layers between sheets and saved hours
Back when I started drafting at a small shop in Dayton, I drew every wall, door, and window line by hand on each sheet, and a 12 sheet set would eat a full week. Last month I finally set up my wall layers as a block in the template, so now I drop it on each plan and just trim what I need, and the same set takes me about 2 days. My boss said 'why didn't you do this a year ago,' and honestly I have no good answer. The thing that finally pushed me was a redline from an architect who moved a wall on 9 sheets and I had to chase them all one by one. Curious if most folks here build their own blocks or just copy paste from an old job.
My old boss at a shop in Toledo made us draw every single line too, and I swore blocks would mess up my layer control, so I kept doing it the slow way for years. Then a job came through where the client changed the ceiling height in every room and I spent two full days just fixing hatch patterns on 14 sheets. That was the day I ate my words and built my first wall block. Now I keep a starter file with blocks for walls, doors, and tags, and I copy between sheets without even thinking about it. Copying from an old job works in a pinch but you drag along junk layers and old text styles you forgot were in there. Build your own blocks once and the next 50 jobs pay you back for the afternoon you lost.
