Ran my 8 inch cutterhead against a 10 inch on the same sandbar in Vicksburg, the small one won
We bid a sandbar job on the Mississippi near Vicksburg last month and had both pumps set up to compare. The 10 inch moved more yards per hour on paper but it kept plugging every 40 minutes on that fine sand. The 8 inch ran 9 hours straight with one minor clog and held the line better in the current. Anyone else finding the small head beats the big one when the material gets fine and the flow is slow?
Ran both heads on the same pump? Because that's the only way you're really comparing the cutters and not the whole dredge. The 10 inch probably plugged because it was pulling harder on a pump that couldn't keep up with the fine sand, not because the head is worse. Smaller head wins when the pump behind it is matched right, that part I agree with.
