That $600 'marine grade' pump failed after 3 weeks in the delta
Bought a fancy impeller pump from a dealer near Stockton because my old one finally gave out. Sticker said marine grade and heavy duty, so I figured it was worth the cash for my barge setup. Three weeks in, the seal blew and it flooded my engine well with sandy water. Dealer won't even answer my calls now, so I'm back to the same cheap brand I ran for 8 years. Anyone else get burned by fancy replacement parts that can't handle real silt loads?
What brand was it so I can steer clear? I run a work skiff out of Rio Vista and learned the hard way that "marine grade" on the box means about as much as "heavy duty" on a tarp. Two things that saved me: mount the pump high in the engine well so it's not sitting in the grit, and pull the impeller housing every few weeks during silt season to rinse it out, sand eats seals faster than anything. Also check the seal material, you want a lip seal rated for abrasive water, not the cheap rubber ones that dry out and crack. Keep the receipt and hit the dealer with your card company if they keep ducking you, three weeks is a joke for six hundred bucks.
