That guy on the Yazoo River back in June who kept running his cutter head into buried timber.

He told me it saved time not to swing around the snags, then 20 minutes later I watched him snap a $2,000 cutterhead tooth clean off, and I still wonder how many guys out there are pulling that same move right now.

Did he at least look surprised when it happened? I swear that's the "I know better" mentality that sinks people every time. You can't just plow through shit on the bottom and expect everything to hold up. Bent shafts and blown seals are expensive lessons. Some guys just have to learn the hard way I guess.

Yeah, the 'I know better' mentality is exactly it. I've seen guys run a dredge like they're in a demolition derby and act all shocked when the pump starts sounding like a coffee grinder full of rocks. It's the same dudes who'll blame the equipment before they ever admit they ran it straight into a buried log. The real kicker is watching them do it again the next week, just maybe an inch slower, like that's gonna save the gearbox next time.
