Why does nobody warn you that a used cutterhead can cost you $1,400 in repairs
Picked up a used 12 inch cutterhead off a guy in Baton Rouge last month for $600, figuring I'd save some cash on a spare. Got it back to the shop and the shaft was worn .030 out of spec, plus two of the bearing seats were chewed up bad. By the time my machinist in Lafayette finished truing it and pressing new bearings, I was into it $1,400 total and three weeks down. For another $500 I could have bought a rebuilt one with a warranty and been dredging the next day. Anybody got a good way to check shaft runout before you hand over cash on a used head?
Did the seller actually hide that from you or did you just not check? A worn shaft on a used head is pretty normal, that's why they sell cheap. Feels more like a $600 lesson than a scam.
