Working on the channel near Galveston last week, I saw a crew using a cutterhead dredge for a job I'd have sworn needed a plain suction dredge. It got me thinking about how we pick our gear.

My old boss in Mobile changed my mind on that. @ivan_cooper

So what's the deal with bosses picking the wrong gear? @joseph455, your old boss in Mobile sounds like my foreman who tried to use a mini-ex to clear a whole acre of heavy clay. It was like watching a spoon dig a swimming pool. The tracks just spun and we lost two days. Some guys just get an idea stuck in their head and no amount of common sense can fix it.

My buddy Jake in Corpus Christi had a project manager insist on a clamshell for a silt job last year. The whole crew knew it was the wrong tool before they even started.
