That tip from the old timer about dampening compound actually worked

Had a guy named Frank who's been doing this since the 70s tell me to mix a tiny bit of water into my bucket of all purpose before using it. Said it helps with the shrinkage on butt joints. I thought he was full of it but I tried it on a job last week in a big living room and dang if the mud didn't lay down flatter. Less cracking too. Anyone else ever try that or is Frank just crazy like a fox?

Frank's not crazy. Tried that trick myself after a buddy swore by it and thought I was just making a mess. Turns out a little water goes a long way, at least for me. My first attempt I added way too much and ended up with soup, had to chuck the whole bucket. Learned my lesson though, just a few drops and it's like magic for those long butt joints.

Yeah, adding water just thins it out and makes it weaker in my experience.
