Why does nobody talk about the 5/8" board on the ceiling at the Davenport Hotel in Spokane
I was doing a patch job at the Davenport Hotel in Spokane last month and noticed they hung 5/8" board on all the ceilings instead of the 1/2" most of us use. Everyone I know says 1/2" is fine for ceilings if you use enough screws, but walking those halls and seeing zero sag after 30 plus years made me rethink it. The extra weight is a pain on a lift, sure, but the fire rating and the way it hides truss movement is real. Am I crazy for thinking we should push 5/8" on ceilings more, or is the labor cost just not worth it for most jobs?
