Bought a $60 "professional" stud finder that still missed a 2x4

Last Tuesday I was hanging a heavy shelf in my garage and the thing beeped confidently over empty drywall, so I just screwed in and the whole bracket ripped out, anyone else given up on fancy sensors and gone back to knocking on the wall?
