Lost $2,300 on a junk car in Tulsa because a mechanic asked me one thing I couldn't answer
I bought a 2004 Civic off a guy in Tulsa for $2,300 about 4 months ago because it looked clean and started right up. When I took it to my mechanic for a quick look, he asked me if I had checked the oil pan for JB Weld or the frame rails for fresh undercoating, and I had no idea what he meant. Turns out the pan was patched and the undercoating was hiding rust holes big enough to stick two fingers through. He did not charge me for the look and just said next time bring a magnet and a flashlight. What is the one thing you always check before handing over cash for a used car?
New undercoating means nothing, some guys spray that on every car they flip just to make it look fresh. A flashlight and magnet won't tell you if the trans is about to drop, so good luck finding a car that passes every test.
