My dad scraped the popcorn off our whole upstairs back in 2019 and it honestly wasn't the nightmare everyone warned him about. The trick is you gotta soak it good with a pump sprayer, let it sit, and it scrapes off like wet chalk. Rushing it dry is where people wreck their drywall and spend weeks patching. So yeah, it can go bad, but I'd say the disaster stories come from skipping the wet step, not from the job itself being impossible.
