My neighbor swore I didn't need to insulate my garage ceiling up here in Edmonton

After our first deep freeze hit -30 he was dead wrong, now I'm ripping down all the drywall I just put up and wondering if anyone else has dealt with sneaky heat loss through uninsulated garages here?

Hold up before you rip all that drywall down. I've been through a couple deep freezes in Calgary and honestly, half the time the cold coming through an uninsulated garage ceiling isn't the main problem - it's usually drafty doors or poor seals around the attic hatch that's doing the real damage. A buddy of mine left his garage ceiling bare for years and his heating bill barely budged, but when he finally foamed the rim joists it made way more difference. I'd grab a temp gun first and check the actual surface temps before you go tearing stuff apart. Your mileage may vary of course, but that drywall might be doing more good than you think, especially if your garage isn't directly attached to your living space.

Classic case of fixing the obvious thing while the sneaky leak does all the damage.
