Dropped $50 on a cheap toner and it was useless

Bought a no-name toner from an electrical supply house in Denver. Couldn't find a single wire behind drywall. Had to borrow a buddy's Fluke Pro3000 and found the circuit in 2 minutes. Anyone tried the cheap ones and had them actually work?

Bought a cheap toner from a surplus store once. Worked fine on open lines, but behind drywall it was basically a flashlight with no batteries. The Pro3000 is overkill for most stuff, but that tone generator actually cuts through walls. Cheap ones just don't have enough juice. They're good for tracing a wire on a bench, not inside a house.
