Overheard a fellow sparky say he never uses a toner for wire tracing, just the ol' touch-and-check method.
Stood there watching him nick a live wire with his linesman pliers in a ceiling plenum last Tuesday and I gotta ask, has anyone else met guys who refuse to use a toner no matter how many times you offer to show them?

Man youd think a toner costs more than a hospital visit for burns.

Guy's been doing it that way for twenty years and thinks a toner is just another thing to carry that'll break. Have you ever asked him what he does when he's tracing a wire behind fire caulking or through a finished wall where he can't just nick things? That's where the whole "touch and check" falls apart for me. I get the old school pride thing, but there's a difference between being fast and being reckless with live conductors in a tight space.
