Just hit 10,000 hours on a 6.7 Powerstroke I've been the only mechanic for

Tbh, my own personal best is just keeping my lawnmower alive for three seasons. That 10k hour mark is wild. Makes me feel like a fraud when my biggest win is remembering to put gas in the thing.

Appreciation post: My shop's old truing stand was off by 2mm for months

Overthink the whole process honestly. My old stand has been fine for years just using a known good wheel as a baseline. Obsessing over a couple millimeters seems like a waste of good building time.

Had a client in Phoenix who insisted their old PC was fine after I found a failing hard drive

Man, that's a classic. Get the S.M.A.R.T. data printout and circle the bad sector count in red pen, then make them sign a paper saying they were told. It sounds over the top, but when that drive finally dies and they lose all their family photos, that signed paper is the only thing that stops them from blaming you. Cover your back, because they always come back angry.

Went to the new library downtown and their traction elevator sounded off

Yeah, that's the planned obsolescence business model in action.

Our big ladle crane gave out mid-pour yesterday afternoon, total mess.

Just eyeballing it until it snaps" is NOT a plan, that's how people get HURT. You lost a third of 500 pounds of metal to the floor? That is a terrifying amount of hot metal just going everywhere. We do a monthly check with a rag, running it along the cable to feel for broken wires you can't see. If it snags, you've got a problem. It takes two minutes and it beats a total failure.
