PSA: A customer's complaint about my solder joints actually improved my work

Ngl, I used to be proud of my 'fast and dirty' solder joints on motherboard repairs. But a guy named Tom at my shop in Detroit said my work looked like 'cold spaghetti' and made me redo a PS4 HDMI port. I got mad at first, but he showed me how to use flux properly and let the joint flow on its own instead of forcing it. Has anyone else had a customer or coworker call you out in a way that actually made you better at this?

A friend of mine at a local repair shop told me my solder looked like I was just trying to get it done before my coffee got cold. He showed me the same trick with letting the flux do the work and letting the joint flow on its own. Took some practice but my board repairs stopped coming back with cracked joints after a few months. That pushback ended up saving me a ton of rework time.

Is having to redo joints that often really that big of a deal though? Some of us have been using the same quick drag method for years and our boards hold up fine in normal use. I mean if you're doing heavy duty stuff or thermal cycling then yeah maybe you need that extra care. But for basic hobby gear i've never had a cracked joint come back even with minimal flux. Honestly telling people to slow down that much feels like gatekeeping sometimes when the cheaper wire works fine if you hit it fast enough.
