The old relay rooms used to have a certain smell...
I was working on a modern MRL machine yesterday and it hit me how much the sound changed. The old gearless rooms, even after hours, you could feel the hum through the floor... its all inverter driven now, quiet as a mouse. I bet the new guys don't know what a DC drive sounds like when the brushes start to chatter. Has anyone else noticed the gear room air just feels different now, not the same ozone smell at all?

Honestly, is it even a machine room if you can't taste the copper in the air?

Oh man, you really hit it. I totally get what you mean about that hum through the floor. You could feel the whole room vibrating with a low rumble even when it was shut down for the night. That ozone smell from the brushes and the heat, it was like the room had a heartbeat. The new inverter rooms are so sterile and quiet, I almost feel like I'm in a server closet or something. It's a real shame, you know, losing that character.
