Vent: Why does everyone assume digital adjusters are better?

I was at a job site last week in Cleveland and overheard a younger mechanic telling a building super that digital door adjusters are 'the only way to go now.' I've been doing this for 22 years and I've seen three digital units fail after 6 months in a high-traffic building. My old mechanical ones with a simple turnbuckle are still running smooth after 8 years. Am I the only one who thinks we jumped too fast on this tech?

You read that article in Door & Hardware magazine last month where they tested both types in actual buildings? The digital ones failed at roughly a 40% higher rate in the first year. That matches what I've seen too - had a customer put in 12 of the digital units in their main entrance, and by month 10, four were already throwing error codes or just stopped adjusting. The old turnbuckle style never gives up unless the threads strip. Some things don't need a circuit board.

Right? It’s like they put a computer where a screwdriver used to be and called it an upgrade. Bet the repair guy shows up with a whole spare door now. 😅
