Rant: Took 8 weeks to fix a BGP peering issue that was a single typo

I spent two months chasing a flapping BGP session between our colo in Dallas and our main data center. Turns out an intern fat-fingered the AS number back in my notes from 2021. Has anyone else burned crazy time on something this dumb?

Is it really that serious though? I mean yeah it sucks debugging something for two months but thats on you for not catching the typo sooner. You should be checking your notes against actual configs before handing them off to anyone let alone an intern. Thats basic due diligence. Plus if you had proper change management or peer review this gets caught in like 20 minutes not 8 weeks. Sounds like the real problem is your process not the missing AS number.

Does anyone actually review their own old notes before handing them off? Ive lost count how many times my own handwriting saved me from repeating a stupid typo. In my experience, peer review is the only thing that keeps us from wasting months on a single digit.
