Grandma's banana bread came out like a brick last weekend

I tried making my grandma's banana bread recipe for the first time and it came out so dense and hard. Followed everything exactly but I think I overmixed the batter cause my kitchenaid was on high for like 3 minutes. Should I be mixing by hand instead or is there another trick to keep it fluffy? Has anyone else blown a family recipe like this?

Wait your grandma's recipe actually says to use a Kitchenaid on high for three minutes? That sounds like concrete mixing instructions, not banana bread. I'd try mashing the bananas by hand and folding the dry ingredients in with a spatula until just combined, any more and you're basically activating all the gluten. I absolutely blew my mom's chocolate chip cookie recipe once by using melted butter instead of softened, they turned into frisbees.

Read somewhere that overmixing is basically making bread, not cake.
