Grandma's pie recipe I wrote off for years until last Thursday

Tbh I always thought my grandma's pumpkin pie recipe was too basic, no spices, no fuss. But I made it exactly as written for a dinner party and everyone said it was the best pumpkin pie they'd ever had. Has anyone else had a family recipe that seemed too simple but turned out perfect?

My aunt's chocolate chip cookie recipe was the same way, just flour, butter, sugar, and chips with almost no vanilla. I added extras one time and it totally threw off the texture and flavor balance. Some things really are perfected exactly how they are, no need to gussy them up.

Totally feel you on this, my mom's meatloaf recipe is literally just ground beef, breadcrumbs, and ketchup but it's always the first thing gone at family potlucks. It's wild how we think fancy means better when the simplest stuff is usually perfected through years of trial and error. Makes me wonder how many other "boring" family recipes I've been sleeping on lol.
