Overheard a trainer in Lexington say 'the foot is the foundation, not the shoe'
I was at a clinic in Kentucky last month and heard a trainer tell a student that line. It made me stop and think about how I sometimes rush to fit the shoe before really looking at the foot's shape. Now I spend an extra minute just feeling the sole and frog before I even pick up a rasp. Has anyone else changed a small part of their routine after hearing something simple like that?

Wince every time I hear something like that because it usually means I've been doing it wrong for years. My old routine was basically slap a shoe on and hope for the best, which explains why my first few clients were so forgiving, or maybe just lame. Now I'm that weirdo talking to the hoof wall before I even touch it, and my turnaround time has definitely suffered for my new conscience.

Honestly that sounds like overthinking it. The shoe IS the foundation for the actual work, that's why we spend so much time on it. You can have a perfect foot but a bad trim or fit ruins everything.
