My thrifted sewing machine needle snapped mid-project on a vintage velvet dress last Saturday
I was finally stitching up this 1970s velvet maxi dress I found at a Goodwill in Portland, and the needle just shattered halfway through a seam (flew off somewhere under my couch, I think). Now I'm stuck with a half-finished hem and a broken needle piece I can't find. Anyone else have a sewing machine part fail on them at the worst possible time?

Oh come on, is this really that big of a deal? Needles snap all the time, especially on thick fabrics like velvet. You can grab a new pack for like five bucks at any craft store. And that missing piece under the couch, just run a magnet over the floor or wait until you find it when you vacuum. It's not like you ruined the whole dress, right? You can just pick up where you left off once you get a new needle.

Oh jeez, I totally disagree with that take! Finding a snapped needle piece is actually a big deal if you ever plan to sit on that couch again or god forbid step on it barefoot. And yeah needles snap but on a thrifted vintage velvet dress that's probably irreplaceable, I'd be way more careful than just grabbing any old pack from a craft store without checking the right size and type first.
