Used to sketch every single piece by hand before sewing, now I just dive straight into fabric
Back in 2018 I'd spend like 2 hours on detailed croquis drawings for each top before even touching my sewing machine. Then I lost my sketchbook during a move to Austin and just started draping muslin directly on the mannequin instead. Anyone else find that going straight to fabric changed their whole design process for the better?

Ditched my sketchbook completely after I realized I was spending more time drawing seam lines than actually testing them on fabric. The croquis would look perfect but the draping would always reveal something totally different anyway. Cutting into muslin right away (especially with a basic bodice block) taught me more about fit in one afternoon than hours of sketching ever did. I still do quick little thumbnails on scrap paper if I'm stuck on a silhouette, but that's like 30 seconds max. Feels way more intuitive to let the fabric do the talking, you know?
