My kimchi volcano erupted all over the kitchen ceiling

Forgot to burp my 2-gallon crock for a single day and the pressure built up so much it blew the lid off. I spent an hour cleaning spicy cabbage off the light fixture. Anyone have a foolproof method for remembering to release the gas?

Used to think that stuff bubbling over was a total fail, like I'd messed up the recipe. Watched this one video where this lady was practically cheering when her jar overflowed.
