My old 'fermentation station' was a wobbly TV tray next to the radiator. After a batch of sauerkraut turned into a fizzy science project that stained the carpet, my wife said 'build something or we're done'. Spent $47 on scrap wood and made a proper shelf in the garage last month.

That "fizzy science project" sounds like a win, not a disaster. A little mess is proof you're actually doing something real, not just buying it from a store. A wobbly TV tray has character, and a stained carpet is a story. Building a whole shelf for this just turns a fun hobby into another chore you have to manage.

Man, @brookep27, you just unlocked a core memory. My dad's garage workbench was a permanent disaster zone of half-finished projects and coffee cup rings. He called it his "active research station." Trying to find a screwdriver meant digging through a beautiful, terrible mess that proved he was always making something.
