Hot take: I used to think a 401k match was just extra cash, but my buddy's story changed my mind

My friend in Austin just showed me his 401k statement from last year. He put in 6% of his pay, and his company matched it dollar for dollar. That free money added up to over $3,000 in one year. I always skipped it because I wanted the cash now, but seeing that number made it real. I signed up for my own plan this morning. Has anyone else had a wake-up call like that with their retirement stuff?

It's wild how we ignore the slow, steady stuff for quick cash. I see it with my friends who skip health checkups to avoid the bill, then get hit with a huge problem later. That free match money is just sitting there, but it feels invisible until you see the total. Makes you wonder what other easy wins we're all missing.
