My eight year old nephew asked me why we 'rent money from the bank' for a house instead of just buying it.

Honestly, how do you even start to explain that to a kid? Most people just don't have hundreds of thousands of dollars sitting around, so a mortgage is the only way. It's basically a long term plan to own something super expensive.
