The day I realized my 'safe' savings account was costing me

I was looking at my statement last month and saw I'd earned $3.12 in interest for the whole year on $8,000. My buddy mentioned his high-yield account was paying over 4%. I'd been losing money to inflation for a decade without even noticing. Anyone else have a similar wake-up call about where they park their cash?
