Can we talk about salt vs brine for brisket?

Just watched a pitmaster from Lockhart swear by dry salt only. No brine. Says it pulls out moisture better. Another guy won't touch a brisket without a 24 hour wet brine. I tried both last weekend on two flats from the same packer. Dry salt gave a better crust. Wet brine was juicier inside. Which camp are you in? Anyone run side by side tests and pick a winner?

Found a piece of pottery in a test pit near Taos that changed my whole approach

I was digging a small unit at a site in New Mexico, just going through the motions, when my trowel hit a painted sherd about 30 centimeters down. Seeing that design made me stop and really look at the soil layers around it for the first time all day. How do you guys make sure you don't miss the small stuff when you're tired?

Had a main hoist brake start slipping on a 50-ton lift in Regina

It was during a pick last Thursday, and I felt the load drift about an inch before I caught it. I set it down right away and called for the mechanic, who found the brake pads were glazed over. Has anyone else had this happen, and what's the best way to check for it before a big lift?

Remember when we used to plot dredge paths with paper charts and a grease pencil?

Now I just punch the GPS coordinates into the onboard screen, but I still keep a paper backup in the cab after a system glitch left us drifting near the Mobile channel for 20 minutes last fall. Anyone else still run a hybrid setup like that?

My uncle told me to toss my old iPod Classic and just use my phone, but I found it in a box last week and it still has my perfect 2008 workout playlist on it.

Plugged it in after a decade, and hearing those songs in that exact order, without any algorithm trying to 'discover' new tracks for me, felt like a time capsule my Spotify can't match, so has anyone else kept an old music player running just for the vibe?

Tried to watch 'Dark' without a family tree diagram and got totally lost

I started the German show 'Dark' on Netflix last weekend thinking it was just a cool time travel mystery. By episode 3, I had to pause and Google character names because I couldn't tell who was related to who across three different time periods. I spent a solid 45 minutes drawing my own chart on a notepad just to keep up with the plot. Has anyone else needed a literal map to finish a show?

Just realized my old method for checking sand moisture was way off

A guy at the regional conference in Toledo told me I was basically guessing by just squeezing a handful. He said to always use a proper moisture teller and aim for 3.5% for our green sand. I bought one the next week and my scrap rate dropped a ton. Anyone else have a tool they resisted that ended up being a game changer?

Showerthought: I was sure charging a $50 rush fee would scare clients off, but it's actually made my schedule way calmer.

Spent $800 on a self-leveling post hole digger attachment

Stop acting like a bent shaft is a death sentence for an $800 tool. I've seen guys beat the hell out of way more expensive gear and get it working again with some basic welding and a grinder. You're acting like one little slope is gonna send the whole rig to the junkyard. For real, just keep a spare shaft in the truck and run it till it snaps. If it lasts 50 holes on flat ground that's already paid for itself compared to digging by hand with a shovel and a bad back. The whole "soil engineer" angle sounds like some overthinking nonsense too. These are simple machines, not rocket surgery. Go fix the thing and get back to work.

Rough break on the sand sucker. Those old cast iron parts can be a real pain to track down. Have you tried reaching out to any of the marine salvage yards up on the Great Lakes?

Finally decided to try a magnesium float over my old steel one for a garage floor in Medicine Hat, and the finish was way smoother with no sticking.

Got a cheap one from a yard sale last summer and it changed my whole weekend. Suddenly I'm the guy who makes fresh salsa every Sunday, lol. The cleanup is a bit of a pain though, gotta soak the blade right away.
