I used to bill by the hour for everything, now I only do it for support work

For the last year I did half my projects hourly and half with a flat project fee. The hourly jobs, like a 40 hour website rebuild, always ended with me explaining my time sheet and clients questioning small tasks. The flat fee jobs, like a $5,000 branding package, were cleaner. I got paid the same whether it took me 30 hours or 45, and the client knew the total cost up front. The difference was trust and fewer awkward talks about money. I'm keeping hourly just for ongoing support where scope changes every month. Anyone else find project pricing just works better for bigger jobs?

Flat fee forces you to get efficient or you lose money.

Wait, you're supposed to lose money if you're not efficient?
