Unpopular opinion: coworking spaces are actually worse for my focus

I hear everyone raving about WeWork or local coworking spots but I had the opposite experience. Last month I tried the WorkHive in Austin for two weeks straight and my output dropped by about 40 percent. The constant foot traffic and random conversations killed my flow state especially during afternoon coding sprints. I ended up finishing that web dev project from my kitchen table three days ahead of schedule. Has anyone else found that noise cancelling headphones still cant fix the distraction problem in those open layouts?

Exactly what nobody talks about is how coworking spaces mess with your brain's unconscious tracking system. Your peripheral vision is constantly registering motion from people walking by and that keeps a tiny part of your attention busy even when you think you're focused. It's like having a bunch of tabs open in the back of your mind that you can't fully close, which drains mental energy over time without you really noticing.

Oh man, this is exactly what I've been saying! I tried a coworking space for like three days and felt like I was getting less done than if I just parked at a noisy coffee shop. The thing is, with coffee shop noise it's this constant background hum you can tune out. But coworking spaces have those random peaks of loudness - someone taking a call right next to you, a group laughing, people walking by your desk every five minutes. Your brain never fully settles because it keeps bracing for the next loud interruption. Noise cancelling headphones help with the hum but they can't stop the visual distraction of people moving around either.
